The ensemble enters the stage while our masked representation of Matthew Shepard sits by the fence above us. We had 6 Matthew Shepards, one for each day that passed between his beating and his death.
"On the way to Denver I looked in my rearview mirror to take one last look at the town. And in the distance I could see the sparkling lights of Laramie, Wyoming."
THE LARAMIE PROJECT
by Moisés Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project
In October 1998, Aaron Kreifels thought he found a scarecrow hanging from a fence in a rural area outside of Laramie, Wyoming.
Tragically, that "scarecrow" turned out to be 21-year-old Matthew Shepard who had been tied to a fence, beaten, and left to die by two men who wanted to torture him because he was gay.
Based on interviews from the residents of the town and the personal journals of Tetonic Theater Project members, The Laramie Project depicts the reactions of many citizens of Laramie, WY as they come to terms with how Shepard's murder has shaken the foundations of their once quiet town.
